Background of the Study
Land disputes in Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area, have increasingly become a flashpoint for violent crimes, reflecting the broader challenges of resource allocation and ethnic tensions. Rapid urbanization and unclear land ownership policies have led to conflicts that escalate into violent confrontations (Ajayi, 2023). Historical grievances and modern economic pressures converge to create a volatile environment where disputes over land rights are often resolved through force. Previous studies suggest that unresolved land disputes can trigger communal violence, with affected parties resorting to criminal acts as a means of settling scores (Okeke, 2024). Local authorities have struggled to mediate these conflicts effectively due to insufficient legal frameworks and administrative capacities. Additionally, socio-economic disparities contribute to a sense of injustice among marginalized communities, further fueling violent responses (Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to assess the relationship between land disputes and the incidence of violent crimes, integrating insights from legal studies, sociology, and conflict resolution theories. By examining case studies and statistical data, the research seeks to establish a clear link between the contested land issues and emerging violent behaviors. This approach is critical to understanding how systemic governance issues and local cultural practices intersect to foster environments conducive to violence (Eze, 2025). The outcomes are expected to inform strategies that promote peaceful conflict resolution and improve legal mechanisms for land administration.
Statement of the Problem
Despite recurring episodes of violence in Asaba, there is a dearth of empirical research specifically linking land disputes to violent crimes in Oshimili South Local Government Area (Afolabi, 2023). The community experiences persistent tensions over land ownership that often escalate into physical confrontations, yet policymakers lack concrete data to guide conflict resolution. The absence of reliable mediation processes and legal enforcement has exacerbated the situation, leading to mistrust and further violence among residents. Moreover, socioeconomic imbalances and historical injustices have left many stakeholders dissatisfied with current governance structures. The resulting environment of insecurity hampers local development and undermines communal harmony. Without a focused analysis on the roots of these conflicts, efforts to establish lasting peace remain ineffective (Umeh, 2024).

To analyze the causes of land disputes in Asaba.
To investigate the correlation between land disputes and violent crimes.
To recommend conflict resolution strategies tailored to the local context.
Research Questions:
What are the primary causes of land disputes in Oshimili South?
How do land disputes correlate with the prevalence of violent crimes in the area?
What measures can effectively resolve these disputes to prevent violence?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Land disputes are significantly associated with an increase in violent crimes in Asaba.
H2: Ineffective legal frameworks exacerbate the frequency and intensity of violent land disputes.
H3: Implementing community-based conflict resolution mechanisms reduces violent outcomes.
